Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
I congratulate President Obama, not only on a victory today but a probably victory following in November.
John Roberts, the new David Souter of our day, has betrayed so much I am too fatigued to even list it all.
I have fully joined the ranks of the disaffected. I believe our once great Constitution, even used as a 'living document', has stretched beyond all elasticity and can no longer regain it's natural state.
I hope everyone enjoys the party b/c it's the summer of 1929 and this crash will be brought to you by your government (well Smoot-Hawley), free of any backstop. That should make the inflation rate soar, and we have already sold Park Place and Boardwalk (by bond of course).
My advice:
Start farming, really farming not 15 tomato poles in the ground, but a mix of crops grown organically in at least an acre size.
Network like crazy in you local/regional farming community. Untold possibilities await you.
Assess how much electricity you really need and find the best method to get off the grid ASAP. Sell electricity back to the power company for extra fun.
This is the crazy one to some, but make sure you have enough firearms and rounds. Now, times 3 on the firearms and times 10 on the rounds of what you first came up with. Buy what you need to make you own rounds.
Livestock is key. Decide what you can handle and start small.
Think of everything electricity, gas, ect. powered for you and realize that it's mostly gone. Think about how you would survive.
I gotta go, taste of sick in my mouth again.

Ummm...yeah, Dude. That's pretty fucking crazy. I'm not super-psyched about our country's fortunes either, but burrowing underground armed to the teeth and looking for Black Op helicopters is not a rational reaction to our political dilemmas, nor an especially healthy way to live--mentally or physically.
Chill out a little, OK? This country fought a Civil War 150 years ago and 750,000 died. We've been thru far worse than this.

Re: The Supremes / Their Eyes Our Blind |
Hey, some people don't like firearms. I really don't either. But if you wind up in a situation unarmed, good luck.
And a little info. My family has a 2.5 acre organic farm that we have busted our ass to get simple things like the soil right since '06. Ever farmed for your food to get through the winter? Farming is not cute. It's back breaking work. If you have little or no clue on this one aspect ...
If you were to take a walk around our community and saw the amount of firearms (some quite beautiful) you might go into spasm. No one can remember the last time someone's house was broken into (in a town rampant with such crime in the southern half where it's a bedroom community) or any crime at all. I'm not saying cause and effect, but something to think about.
620,000 is the historically accepted number of men killed in the CW. I've seen 700,00, but not 750,000.

If you wind up in a situation armed and untrained you will need more than luck.
I do think you are beeing overly dramatic though - all this was was the Constitutional process of checks and balances being adhered to and followed.
Mrs. Mando have been growing all of our own veggies for the past 5 years. We have a 52 week growing season in Tidewater although the variety gets pretty thin for about 12 weeks. It's very rewarding work. We belong to 3 CSAs that we don't pay for because we volunteer.
I recently put a slide fire bump stock on my AR giving me a 900 rounds per minute rate of fire. I reload. The local police precicnt officers love it. Just in case the zombie apocalypse - or Barackalypse as some of my myopic Republican friends are calling it - occurs, I am toying with the idea of a rail mounted flamethrower and chain saw to be used in tandem with an acid spraying CamelBak.
It isn't going to be a walk in the park, but we'll be fine. If not, we'll die and won't give a shit. Besides, I'm not living my life for this world anyway...........

There are lots of tenting materials for plants. We plan to go into January this year w/ leafy green stuff (Kale, Swiss Chard) and the rest hasn't been decided yet. (75 foot row)
I am still terrified of firearms. I took the NRA pistol then rifle class. It helped a little. A necessary tool.

A firearm is just a tool. The weapon is the mind and intent of the user.
Best to get over your fear or sell your firearms.
You aren't afraid of a hammer or a rake are you?
I'm not afraid of my pruning shears, but I have new found respect for them because I pruned the web of skin between my thumb and forefinger on my left hand and it fucking hurt.

Re: The Supremes / Their Eyes Our Blind |
For Micah:
Here's some updated info for you on the #'s of Civil War dead. (I'm not trying to be a dick here...it surprised me as well but it's now well documented/accepted:)
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/science/civil-war-toll-up-by-20-percent-in-new-estimate.html?pagewanted=allI don't see where in my post I put down farming at all. I live in a state dependent on dairy farming and while I don't do it myself it's obviously a hard life predicated on sweat and toil and perseverance.
But I fail to see any rational connection you've made for what all the SUPCO rulings have to do w/arming yourself for some kind of apocalyptic nightmare.
My point about the CW is that as divided as our country is now (and it is), it's nowhere near the level of emergency it was in 1860, and talk of barricading yourself where you live b/c some shadowy entity is coming to "get you" and so you need to go all Road Warrior on everyone seems more than a little paranoid and an excuse to show your anger at--something--by shootin' stuff (usually, it turns out--people), til they're all dead.
It seems an exaggerated response to frustrations we all share about the state of the nation, which, I admit and agree, is pretty piss fucking poor right about now.

Thanks for the CW info.
grendel, I answered some of your questions elsewhere. Please forgive me for not going though a detailed answer, but I'm frankly tired. It is out of no disrespect to you.
I will say this is that I lost it there today and I should have stayed away from a computer.

I'm curious about what brought on your missive on this particular day. (Of course, if you just need to spew a little in public, this is as good as any place to do it...)
I wish I shared your "optimism" that this court decision would have any effect on November outcomes. (of course, the other result is even more horrifying.) Money and power hold far more sway than dropping some health care crumbs to the disenfranchised. If you're predicting a crash I would relegate that blame to the titans of finance purportedly in charge of the European mess who refuse to hear the echoes of not-so-distant history.
As to your advice for survival - if society as we know it is gone, I'm gone with it. Life's not worth living if I have to kill somebody else to live in that dsytopian wasteland.

Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
I know you don't like anything about what I wrote uj. I know it's not your style and you find it distasteful.
My rant has been building for a number of years now. I think to myself, we have to pay (income tax) a huge number of baby boomers for their SS check. But, the retired boomers dwarf all working folks behind them in number. Add payroll tax to this and it still does no compute, and we have paid for nothing else, like the court system. The rate of growth of jobs would have to be almost vertical to begin to pay for this. Now let's add Bush's prescription plan, all the bailouts (still waiting for the hearings on waste fraud and abuse on that whole deal), and top it off by insuring 30 more million which in itself will be a mind boggling number.
I see these numbers and it fills me with despair. They don't add up and one day our bonds will find no buyers. There is nothing to do to stop that I can see.
Who wants a dsytopian wasteland? I realize it's rhetorical, but I figured I'd answer it. That's a no on the dsytopian wasteland. I think we are all on the same side on that question.

Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
Dialog is healthy, debate is a good thing.
Every generation feels this same pain - boomers are not skipping off into the sunset loaded with moneybags. Yes, my generation is a large one - but I find lots of people my age saving hard for the day when the piper comes due, the market crashes... and putting it away for their kids! What is unconscionable is the lack of leadership and will to fix the SS issue - it's as easy as lifting the cap and making high earners pay more into it! Easy fix.
"we have paid for nothing else, like the court system" - You left off the two wars, veterans benefits etc. - a huge elephant in the room. The wars alone add $1 to $2 trillion conservatively. Paying for 30 million more on the insurance rolls is far cheaper than having those same numbers show up in emergency rooms uninsured, leaving someone holding the bag.
"Now let's add Bush's prescription plan, all the bailouts" - Let's add also the Bush tax cuts for the very wealthy, the malevolent abuse of power enabled by the Citizens United court case, the total manipulation of all branches of gov't. by big money.
Maybe we should be filled with despair - but I'm not. Humans are geared for survival, built into our DNA. Creative solutions, united actions... vote with your legs or your pen, but we all need to stop waiting for someone else to fix it. Don't get down, get active.

Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
Maybe we should put Roberts in charge of dealing with SS.
Oh, whoops. That really would be unconstitutional.
But seriously ... I'm kind of in shock ... somebody actually put logic and the law ahead of their personal politics in today's era?!? I didn't know they could DO that anymore. Agree with Roberts' conclusion or not, that kind of independent thinking is impressive. It even makes me optimistic about America. Silly me, maybe. But still.
Btw, best pic of the day:

Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
The problem with all the gloom & doom sorts is it's all been said before...and fizzled. Seriously. Malthus and population growth, and a thousand more. Putting your head in the sand is always bad, but unfortunately, it works. Having a Polly Anna attitude is good for survival, and it functions well over the past few hundred yrs. SS can be easily fixed with an adjustment of a yr or two, and not that I am saying other problems are as easy, but underlying assumptions ALWAYS change, and the "sky is falling" never turns out to be as bad as predicted.
Our "end of empire" is much more likely to look like Rob's homeland did the past 100, over the next 100 yrs, if you follow...
And the really great part about optimism? When you "win", everyone wins...who wants to be "right" about the end, eh?

I'm kind of surprised to read this from you WT. Pollyanna only works for survival when real survival isn't at stake, but instead, as you correctly observed, people perceive their survival is threatened. Going head in the sand when your survival is truly threatened only makes you an easy target.
Now, with all of that said, yesterday was no big deal. I'm actually of the opinion that Justice Roberts knew exactly what he was doing and by so narrowly defining ACA as a tax with microns wide coverage of the Commerce clause, he very effectively restricted Congress' ability for future expansive regulatory moves. Obama said as much back in 2005 when he opposed Roberts' appointment because he did not trust his (Roberts') political philosophy regarding whether or not the "....Commerce Clause empowers Congress to speak on those issues of broad national concern that may be only tangentially related to what is easily defined as interstate commerce."
I stumbled on this article yesterday and it made perfect sense to me...
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/scocca/2012/06/roberts_health_care_opinion_commerce_clause_the_real_reason_the_chief_justice_upheld_obamacare_.htmlI think in the long run, Roberts will prove himself to be worthy of Obama's distrust and yesterdays ruling was a stroke of pure fucking genius.

Re: The Supremes / Writing is like Exorcism |
I think we missed each other: I am talking big picture, "how bad is it?" world views that color how you live day to day...I've heard so many doom and gloom predictions, from the v specific regarding financial markets destroying all that I own (87? 99? 02? 07?) to global warming to extinction...or to the v general on...blah, blah, blah...you get the idea, each with v well reasoned, well articulated sets of assumptions as to why a particular worst case scenario was absolutely certain...
And of course, what happened?
zzzzz....
So, yeah, I don't see the end of the world or even the end of various activities that I hold near and dear just around the corner...but it's as much due to cynicism and realism (vis-a-vis all the failed arguments of the past) in my case; Polly Anna got kicked out me a few yrs what with all the bad luck on the medical front!
